OWSD Southern Africa chapters celebrate the International Day for Women and Girls in Science

The United Nations declared 11 February to be a day to celebrate women and girls in science. The day recognizes that science and gender equality play a pivotal role in achieving the SDGs.

The United Nations declared 11 February to be a day to celebrate women and girls in science. The day recognizes that science and gender equality play a pivotal role in achieving the 2030 agenda for the Sustainable Development Goals.

According to UNESCO data (2014-2016) only around 30% of all female students select STEM- related fields in higher education. Gender stereotypes and long standing biases are hindering girls and women from participating in science-related subjects. Celebrating this day brings awareness to the society of the importance of women and girls in building a powerful industry and fostering innovation.

Several OWSD National Chapters from Southern Africa as well as members from other countries in the region have joined hands to organize a Zoom celebration on the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The theme of the gathering will be 'Uniting women and girls in science during the COVID-19 pandemic'. It will take place on Thursday, February 11, from 9 am - 1 pm Central Africa Time (UTC +2). Registration is possible at: bit.ly/3tNW8W6. The National Chapters and countries involved include South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Botswana and Zimbabwe.
